Teahouse on the Subzak pass.  This picture was actually taken in 1995 or 96 on a trip with a NGO, my first visit to Afghanistan.  A fascinating introduction to the tribal culture of the region, a great country torn apart by civil war and a phenomenon of the 'Taliban', a word I hadn't encountered before, on the rise.

The Salang Tunnel, at 3400m, is one of the highest tunnels in the world, completed by the Soviet Union in 1964 to connect the northern Afghan cities with Kabul.  Recently reopened and in a terrible state of disrepair, in the middle of a fierce winter, the journey from Kabul to Mazar-e-Sharif could only be described as exhilarating.
